Dr. Ronald Barnes [ Resume ]
Retired Executive Director, Indiana School Executive Leadership Academy, and Professor of Leadership & Policy Studies, Indiana University; Retired Superintendent, High School District 230, Orland Park, Illinois

Ronald Barnes has served as a school administrator and university professor for over 40 years. He retired from Consolidated High School District 230, suburban Chicago in 1994 after serving as superintendent for fourteen years. Prior to District 230 he served in various leadership positions in both large and small school systems. After retiring as Superintendent, he joined the Education Leadership faculty at Indiana University where he directed the Indiana School Executive Leadership Academy. He joined the emeritus faculty ranks in 2008. He has been an executive search consultant for over 20 years.

Dr. Barnes received his B.S. and M.Ed. from the University of Northern Iowa and his Ed.D. from Indiana University in Bloomington.

Dr. Houston Conley [ Resume ]

Dr. Conley has been Deputy Superintendent of Dayton Public Schools, Dayton, Ohio; Executive Assistant to the Superintendent of District of Columbia Public Schools, Washington, D.C.; Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction, Professional Growth and Development; principal and classroom teacher, Chattanooga, Tennessee. He has been an adjunct professor at Peabody-Vanderbilt University, University of Alabama and the University of Tehran. He is a retired full professor of education from Virginia Tech University, Blacksburg, Virginia. Dr. Conley has served as an educational leader and board member in a wide variety of settings which include urban, suburban, metropolitan, multicultural and international systems.

Dr. Conley received his B.S. degree from Alabama A&M University and his M.A. and Ed.D. degrees from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Dr. Darrell Dick [ Resume ]

Dr. Darrell Dick has served as an interim superintendent in seven different suburban Chicago school districts since retiring in 1994 as Superintendent of Wauconda Community Unit School District 118 in Wauconda, Illinois. His 15 year leadership role in Wauconda was preceded by a 10 year administrative career in Colorado schools. Currently, he is a consultant for the Illinois State Board of Education and the Lake County Regional Office of Education.

Dr. Dick received his BA from Wabash College, his M.Ed. from the University of Illinois, and his Ed.D. from the University of Northern Colorado.

Dr. Mark Friedman [ Resume ]

Dr. Mark Friedman has been a partner with BWP since the company’s inception. Prior to that, he was a partner and President of the Bickert Group. In addition, he served as the Superintendent of the Libertyville, Illinois schools for 17 years, was Assistant Superintendent in Lincolnwood, Illinois and a Principal/Director of Instruction in Itasca, Illinois. He was named 2009 Superintendent of the Year for the State of Illinois, and was twice named Superintendent of the Year for Lake County, Illinois. He has consulted with school districts across the United States.

Dr. Friedman received a B.S. from Arizona State University, a Masters in Public Administration from Roosevelt University and a Doctorate from Vanderbilt University.

Dr. Julie Underwood [ Resume ]

Former Chief Legal Counsel for NSBA and Dean of Education, Miami University, Ohio


Julie K. Underwood, a nationally recognized authority on school law, is currently Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Prior to this appointment, Underwood served as a faculty member and dean of the UW-Madison School of Education. In addition, she has been dean of Miami University ’s School of Education and Allied Professions and Associate Executive Director and General Counsel for the National School Boards Association in Washington, D.C. At the NSBA, she led a legal advocacy program on behalf of the nation’s public school boards. She has co-authored several books and in 2008 received the Outstanding Educator Award from the Wisconsin Association of School District Administrators.

Dr. Underwood has a bachelor’s degree in political science and sociology from DePauw University , a law degree from Indiana University, and a Ph.D. in educational leadership from the University of Florida.

Dr. Ken Underwood [ Resume ]

Dr. Underwood served as superintendent in Lebanon, Indiana; Schaumberg and Esmond, Illinois; Fargo, North Dakota; and Charleston, West Virginia. Also, he was a principal and assistant superintendent. He then retired from Virginia Tech after he advised Doctoral students in school administration for 18 years.

He served extensively with NSBA and AASA and was Secretary/Treasurer of Century Club for 30 years. He has received many awards and recognitions including an AASA Distinguished Service Award and a Friend of Horace Mann League Award.

Dr. Underwood received his B.S. and M.S. from Northern Illinois and Ed.D. from Indiana University.
